MILTON : - [Toland ( John )]. The life of John Milton, containing, besides the history of his works, several extraordinary characters of men and books, sects, parties, and opinions. London, Printed by John Darby in Bartholomew Close. 1699FIRST SEPARATE EDITION, pages 165, (1, errata), without the initial blank leaf which is only rarely found, 8vo, a very good copy, pleasantly and sympathetically bound in recent quarter calf, gilt ruled and lettered spine, vellum corners. Wing T 1766. Coleridge 414. Toland’s important biography of Milton was first published in 1698 in the ‘Amsterdam’ edition of the collected prose works. In this edition an ‘exact catalogue of all Milton’s works in their true order’ is added at the end : this seems to be the first attempt at a canon of Milton’s works, and thus the first Milton bibliography.ALSO WITH THIS LOT: JUVENAL.
