3 CHECKS, 1878-1880: Charles Lux- (1823-1888) was born in Germany, and came to the U.S. when just 15 years old. He joined the Gold Rush in 1850. He opened a butcher shop in San Francisco and invested his money in the cattle business. With a partner he started "Miller & Lux" and by 1863 it was one of the largest cattle & ranching empires in the West! The firm owned 10 ranches in 3 states and owned some 600,000 acres of land.
