MILLARD FILLMORE (1800-74) President. ALS, "Fillmore", as MOC, 1 1/2pp (single sheet), Jan 30, 1841, 4to, Washington, to his law partner Solomon G Haven, nice political content. In part, "...you and I do not differ much about the merit of Canadian patriotism. I know not why Doct. Stagg published my letter to him, but no matter, it was written in too much haste for the public eye, and perhaps for that reason he published it in spite. The Judgeship is settled, and though I was at first vexed that Hall should be induced to be a candidate, and then passed over...I am inclined to think it was managed in the most judicious manner...we should all rejoice in the result...I called last evening to have a talk with Genl Van Rennselaer...[John C.] Calhoun and [Willie] Mangum had some sharp words in the Senate today..." In this letter Fillmore is referring to Nathan Kelsey Hall (1810-74), a former law student of his and later his law partner. He was Judge of the Court of Common Pleas at the time, and later served as Postmaster General in Fillmore's administration. VG. $750-1,000
