Today, Stidham's most popular paintings celebrate trout and the other fly fishing glamour species. Still, he is best known for his etchings. Over the
years, he has created about seventy of them; many featuring waterfowl but also fish and flies. The quality of his etchings has elicited comparisons to the
work of Frank Benson. Mike explains that his fly patterns were inspired by illustrations he did for several books, namely Randall Kauffman's Tying Dry Flies,
Tying the Nymph and Jack Dennis' Trout Fly Tying Manual #2. While the copper plates used to make an etching are generally capable of producing only about
a hundred good impressions, Stidham has found that by steel-plating them, the quality of replication remains excellent from the first image pulled to the
last. Still, the artist steadfastly adheres to the traditional definition of "limited edition" and keeps his print-runs from 450 to 850.
