MI. Marshall. Village of Marshall. 18 3/4?. April 8, 1841. (Bowen Unlisted). Printed in blue. Typeset. Bank of Marshall, pay the bearer, eighteen & three fourth cents, in current Michigan Bank Notes, when presented in sums of one dollar or more and debit the village Corporation. Signed by E(dward) Butler, treasurer, and J(oseph) C. Frink, president.
An extraordinary and very important Michigan scrip note, by every indication unique. To start, the denomination is rare, but what is most important is that this municipal issuer escaped Bowen. The signers are identified in Bowen as having opened their own banking offices, and issued their own scrip, in the 1850s and 1860s. Frink was also cashier of the Bank of Marshall (see following lot). Worthy of a serious bid.
