Lot of 20 copper ore specimens from the historic Michigan Copper Country of the Keweenaw Pennisula. This was the first copper district within the U. S. The specimens are primarily from the Almeck, Algoona, Calumet and Hecla, Mohawk, and White Pine mines; this suite of samples was collected prior to 1923 as Calumet and Hecla Mines merged with its competitors to become Calumet and Hecla Mines Consolidated that year. Lot includes native copper in datolite collected from the 500 ft. level of the Calumet and Hecla Mine and a beautiful suite of crystaline copper - many exhibiting spectacular twinning. Of particualr note is a unique example of native cooper encapsulated within calcite euhedra. Mineral species also include the copper oxides cuprite, malaconite, and tenorite; secondary copper minerals such as atacamite, and chrysocolla; and several interesting copper arsenides such as algodonite, domeykite, and whitneyite. This lot represents many wonderful examples of the copper ores. Samples range from less than 1 to 4 inches in diameter.
