Incorporated in Michigan. Cert. #B1141 issued to Webster F. Putnam & Co. for 50 shares. Signed by R. Stanton, president, and J.Wheeler Hardley, secretary. No vignette. Orange border and under print (“50 shares”) on white paper. U/C. Printer: John A. Lowell & Co., Boston. 7 x 10.” The old Phoenix mine is included in the present operation famous for having produced the largest mass of native copper ever found, weighing upwards of 500 short tons [Ref: The Copper Handbook, 1906, p. 814]. The Phoenix Copper Company bought the holdings of the Lake Superior Copper Company in 1849 and worked the Phoenix fissure from 1850-1853. The mine produced over 17 millions pounds of copper and more than 25,000 ounces of silver, but no profit. Phoenix Copper became the Phoenix consolidated in 1899 and was sold to the Keweenaw Copper company in 1923 [ref: Wilson & Dyl].
