MGM metal lion sculpture. Copper sculpture in the round is nicely detailed with mouth open as if preparing to give the famous MGM roar. Since 1924 the lion has been the mascot of MGM and its familiar opening credit in all its pictures, which encompass some of the biggest hits in Hollywood history including ''The Wizard of Oz'', ''Gone with the Wind'' and ''Ben-Hur''. The Lion introductory logo was originally designed by Lionel S. Reiss, art director at Paramount Studios. Lion stands on a rectangular base made to resemble rock, embossed, ''Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Lion / The Greatest Star on the Screen''. Measures 4.5'' x 2.5'' x 3.25''. Some slight discoloration to the underside of the base, else near fine.
