MEXICO, Mexico City, gold cob 8 escudos "quasi-Royal," 1714 J, "GRAT" variety with date on reverse, very rare, NGC MS 61 (1715 Fleet Shipwreck Label), ex-McGregor, Flemming Plate. S-M30; Cal-2212; KM-57.3; Fr-6. 26.85 grams. Nearly round and with perfectly detailed, 100% full shield and cross, also with choice full crown and nearly full legends including a bold full date above the cross, all lustrous and rich in color, a piece that Flemming described as a "large planchet 'test' issue" (and Schulman described as "almost Royals" in 1972) with "only two examples known," a very handsome piece no matter how you describe it, with appeal well beyond the realm of regular issues. From the 1715 Fleet, with Philip Flemming photo-certificate from 2014 and plated on page 8 of his article "Varieties of the 1714 Mexico City 8 Escudos" in the June 2014 issue of the journal of the U.S. Mexican Numismatic Association (copy included), pedigreed to the McGregor Collection (stated on label).
