MEXICO, Mexico City, gold cob 8 escudos, 1714 J, date over GRAT on obverse, rare, NGC MS 62 (1715 Fleet Shipwreck Label), ex-McGregor, Flemming Plate. S-M30; Cal-unl; KM-57.2; Fr-6. 26.88 grams. Bold, full, and well-centered cross, the shield also full but off-center in the right direction to allow a 100% full 1714/GRAT (Flemming: "by far the clearest example"), somewhat smallish flan with a few blunted edge-points and beveled periphery on reverse (as made), light yellow in color with muted luster. From the 1715 Fleet, with Philip Flemming photo-certificate and plated on page 10 of his article "Varieties of the 1714 Mexico City 8 Escudos" in the June 2014 issue of the journal of the U.S. Mexican Numismatic Association, pedigreed to the McGregor Collection (stated on label).
