MEXICO, Mexico City, gold cob 8 escudos, 1714 J, NGC MS 63 (1715 Fleet Shipwreck Label), Sedwick Plate. S-M30; Cal-2213; KM-57.2; Fr-6. 26.78 grams. Round flan with superb full shield despite graininess from progressive die-rust that eventually killed this die (see next lot), bold full date and oMJ and denomination VIII (but typically beveled periphery), full but off-center cross (harboring tiny patches of gray coral) with metal extending past the outer border of dots as a result, muted luster, rich yellow color. From the 1715 Fleet, Plate Coin on page 80 of the 2nd edition (1990) of The Practical Book of Cobs (stated on label).
