MEXICO, Mexico City, gold cob 2 escudos, 1713 J, NGC MS 63 (1715 Fleet Shipwreck Label), "top pop," ex-McGregor. S-M30; Cal-1886; KM-53.1; Fr-7b. 6.75 grams. Curiously oblong flan oriented in the best possible way to show a complete date and oXMJ while also retaining a choice full shield and denomination II as well as a perfect full cross (for the type), all bold and rich in color, currently tied with two others for finest in the NGC census but Flemming says "by far the finest." From the 1715 Fleet, with Philip Flemming photo-certificate, pedigreed to the Superior auction of June 1976 (lot 2488) and to the McGregor Collection (stated on label).
