MEXICO, Mexico City, gold cob 1 escudo, 1714 J, date 17J4 with J for second 1, very rare, NGC MS 64 (1715 Fleet Shipwreck Label), "top pop," ex-Real Eight, ex-McGregor. S-M30; Cal-unl (Type 207); KM-unl (51.2 for type); Fr-7c. 3.27 grams. Dainty full shield with bold oMJ and clear date with penultimate digit clearly a J punch but first digit clearly an I (despite the NGC labeling as "J's in date"), one of just two in the NGC census (both at same grade) and among only three or four known, the cross-and-tressure also complete and sharp, lustrous all over. Flemming attributes this strange variety to die sinker incompetence, noting that the same person was responsible for the mismanaged 1714 8 escudos designs with GRAT, date over GRAT, Royal dies, and other oddities. From the 1715 Fleet, with Philip Flemming photo-certificate from 2016, pedigreed to the Real Eight Co. (Schulman auction of November 1972, lot 446) and to the McGregor Collection (stated on label).
