(MEXICAN WAR MEXICAN SPY`S REPORT): Fascinating war-date A.Ms. (unsigned), a spy's report headed "News items sent from Veracruz by a Trustworthy Person", 2pp. 4to., Vera Cruz, Apr. 12, 1847, most likely sent to Gen. Cosme Furlong in Puebla, in Spanish. Two weeks after the fall of the port city of Vera Cruz to forces under Winfield Scott, a spy submits his report American strength. In part: "...Day 6. A meeting of war was held by the enemy...they decided [to march on the interior]...nine hundred voluntary infantrymen as well as Generals Scott and Worth with sixty horses of escort...one thousand men arrived from Tampico and departed...The Plaza is defended by 900 infantrymen and 500 volunteers and the castle is defended by another 300..eleven thousand men are expected to disembark this week...To the armament which we were forced to leave behind another ten thousand guns have been added. These enemies are trained only in the class and handling of artillery...in regard to discipline our 'Nationals' are better...their arms...are very dirty, and undoubtedly ours are better...their officers are well trained...our forces at Cerro Gordo amount to seven thousand infantrymen and three thousand horses, with forty cannon, besides those that are on foot...the enemy forces at Cerro Gordo amount to nearly ten thousand men..." Much more excellent military information, and in fine condition. Santa Anna's forces faced those of Scott at Cerro Gordo a week later, with disastrous consequences for the Mexicans. $300-400
