MEXICAN-AMERICAN WAR, Head Quarters Army of Mexi Mexican-American War, Head Quarters Army of Mexico,
Mexican-American War, Head Quarters Army of Mexico, Mexico, March 6, '48 Orders. No. 18…Military Convention for the Provisional Suspension of Hostilities… [Mexico City: Army Field Press, 1848]. Folio broadside 44. X 32.6 cm. Printed in five columns, old folds with minor splitting repairs, very good copy. First edition Streeter Sale 284: "Article II of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, signed 2 Feb. 1848, provided for holding meeting between representatives of the heads of the two armies to workout "a provisional suspension of hostilities." This broadside signed in writing as official by Irwin McDowell, then in the adjutant general's department at Mexico. Gives the terms for such suspension of hostilities and marks, for all practical purposes, the end of the Mexican War.

The Huntington Library has this in an eight-page pamphlet with the written signature of L. Thomas, Assistant Adjutant General, at the end. Mr. Cary S. Bliss tells me this pamphlet is printed from the same type as the printing of the order in the issue of the American Star for 7 March 1848, and that my broadside, which I sent to him to check, is printed from a different type, probably that of another army press. At this time Major-General Butler had succeeded [General Winfield] Scott as Commander-In-Chief of our army in Mexico, - TWS." Ebertstadt Mexican War Collection having the eight page pamphlet as Garrett Mexican-American War pp. 406-407: "The order also includes the names of the commissioners who signed the original document." This broadside was issued to be posted for reading, and we doubt that many survived. This is the only copy we can trace being offered since the Streeter sale. Courtesy of Michael Heaston, Austin. Consigned Lot

This 2006 March Texas State Historical Association Charity Auction is being held in Austin, TX on February 12 - March 4, 2006.
