MERINID: Abu Al-Hasan 'Ali (1331-1351), silver square dirham (0.81g), Tilimsan (Tlemcen) mint, AH 737-749. Obverse legend "la ilaha illallah al-amru kulluhu lillah ma aqraba farajallah tilimsan" ("there is no god except Allah, all matter belongs to Allah, how close is the relief from Allah, Tilimsan"), reverse "allahu rabbuna muhammadun rasuluna al-qur'anu imamuna" ("Allah is our lord, Muhammad is our messenger, Al-Qur'an is our Imam"). A-M520 (RR), Hohertz-272. Among the nicest examples, very fine. Very rare.

An important and very rare Marinid issue minted in Tilimsan after its conquest by the Marinids in AH 737. The phrase "ma aqraba farajallah" ("how close is the relief from Allah") can be seen as an indication to the victorious conquest of the city. Recent examples sold in Nuqud Gallery auction 1 (lot 124) for $90 and SARC auction 36 (lot 2262) for $119.
