Roger II was a Norman King in Sicily. He united all of the Norman conquests in Italy into one kingdom. The brief sketch of Roger's life in Wikipedia shows him to a skilled military leader, a sharp politician, and a driven personality.

Sicily's location made it a natural hub for trade throughout the entire Mediterranean.

The tari originated from Islamic gold coinage, the quarter dinar. The small size gave it tremendous flexibility for trade and purchasing power. The tari from Sicily will have Arabic and Latin legends. Bilingual coins absolutely fascinate me!!

An Islamic coin expert previously attributed as, Sphar 55. 2nd series, struck 1130-1140,
Obverse: IC XC NI KA surrounding a large cross
Reverse: ruler entitled al-mu'tazz billah / al-malik rujjar / al-mu'tazim

rare.
Clear final digit of date, ihd(a) for 1, but followed immediately by bism Allah, as the engraver failed to leave enough room for the remainder of the date. Since this type was struck 1130-1140, i.e., AH524-534, the full date can only be AH531.

Wow!! Call me impressed
