MEAGHER, THOMAS F.
(1823 - 1867) Irish-born Union brigadier general who commanded his Irish Brigade at Antietam, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville where his brigade was decimated. War-date A.E.S. as Brigadier General on the verso of a letter of major John W. Nowell, 3pp. 4to., Fredrick, Md., Nov. 4, 1862 to Brig. Gen. Thomas Hillhouse. Nowell relates that a private under his command had been severely wounded at Antietam, but in light of his exemplary service should receive an officer's commission. He also notes: "...I am here only to convey the remains of the late lamented Major General [Israel B.] Richardson to Michigan... Gen'l [Winfield Scott] Hancock who is in command of Richardson's division...". On the verso, Meagher endorses the document: "Cordially approved and recommended to the most favorable consideration of the Adjutant General...". Very good.
