MEADE, GEORGE G.
(1815 - 1872) Union major general who commanded brilliantly at Gettysburg, leading to a Union victory and the turning point of the Civil War. A.L.S. 3pp. 8vo., Philadelphia, Sep. 27, 1871, to Brevet Brigadier General H. L. Abbot, marked " Confidential", in part:"… A friend of mine has made inquiry as to the character and standing of Lieut. Rich'd L. Hoxie…as I see…he was …under your command I take the liberty of asking you what you know about him. To be explicit Lt. H. has engaged the affections of the daughter of the gentleman …I have no doubt from the young gentleman being in the Corps that he is all right, although I have known some exceptions to this usually correct rule…". Very good to fine.
