(1826 - 1885) Union major general and general-in-chief of the army whose hesitation in attacking Confederate forces caused him to be sacked by Lincoln. A.L.S. 2pp. 8vo., New York, Dec. 12, 1883, to ex-Union Gen. Henry Abbot making arrangements to meet with Abbot at either Willet's Point of Governors Island, New York, likely in connection with McClellan's interest in the Sims Torpedo. The Sims Torpedo was a cigar-shaped device that traveled at the surface of the water, propelled by an electric motor developed by Thomas Edison and controlled by an operator on shore through a long electrical wire. It was tested at Fort Totten in 1893 and was produced until 1897. Fine.
