(1898 - 1975) American Army general who held Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge, remembered for his reply to a German surrender ultimatum, ""Nuts!"" A fine grouping of items, including: fine content T.L.S. on his personal letterhead, 1p. 8vo., Washington, Apr. 22, [1966], to Joseph Filipps, in full: ""''Nuts' is the word I used immediately when I learned that the Germans were demanding surrender"". Along with a fine vintage S.P. 8"" x 10"" b/w, mounted, a handsome chest, up portrait in uniform, boldly signed across the face in white pen; and a handsome relic, a highly detailed octagonal brass commemorative Airborne plaque, measuring 5 1/2"" x 5 1/2"", honoring the Allied taking of Bastogne and McAuliffe's famous defiance. It shows a Nazi officer presenting the surrender terms to an American officer, portrayed in high relief against the backdrop of the town of Bastogne with American parachutes dropping to the ground. McAuliffe's legendary declaration ""Nuts"" is shown above the date Decber 44"". A fine grouping of items, in very good condition.
