(1898 - 1975) American Army general who held Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge, remembered for his reply to a German surrender ultimatum, ""Nuts!"" A most important partly-printed D.S. (not signed by McAuliffe), 1p. 4to., Washington, Feb. 6, 1945, being McAuliffe's promotion to the rank of Major General, effective from Jan. 3, 1945. At the conclusion, the document bears the signatures of Secretary of War HENRY L. STIMSON and that of the Adjutant General. McAuliffe was originally commissioned as an artillery officer, and following this promotion, he was assigned to serve as Gen. Maxwell Taylor's artillery commander in the 101st Airborne Div. He later jumped with the division into Normandy, coordinated the final assault on Carentan, participated in Operation Market Garden, and gained his greatest notoriety for his stubborn, unyielding defense of Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge. Interestingly, the promotion is made effective from the day on which the 101st Airborne finally turned the German advance. This document originated from his family's estate, and was at one time contained within his scrapbook. Very good.
