January 27th, 1764-Dated French and Indian War Era Colonial America, Partially-Printed Document Signed, “MAYHEW BELCHER” as witness, Dedham, Massachusetts, Choice Very Fine.
Colonial America 1764 Document as an Indentured Apprentice from Dedham, Massachusetts, nicely Signed, “MAYHEW BELCHER” (1745 - 1778), the Revolutionary War Minuteman who went to fight upon the Lexington Alarm of April 19th, 1775 as a witness. It reads, in part: ".....in the fourth year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George the third, by Grace of God, King of Great-Britain, ...". Here, a young boy is bonded to a family to learn the secrets and mystery of a “Feltmaster”. This boldly printed Document lays out in detail the responsibility of the family to the lad, and also what is expected of the boy. Document autographed two officials and the two people that is taking the boy apprentice. One of the men signing the document as witness is MAYHEW BELCHER, who went into the Continental Army as a Private, in Capt. Robert Orr's company, Col. John Bailey's regt., which marched on the alarm of April 19, 1775; service, 8 days; also, Capt. Nathan Alden's co., under command of Lieut. John Whitman, Col. Edward Mitchell's regt.; marched to Rhode Island on the alarm of Dec. 8, 1776; service, 12 days. Mayhew Belcher had moved to Bridgwater in the days prior to the battle of Lexington and Concord. The Document measures about 8” x 12" two paper seals intact, folds a few minor archival mends on the reverse.
