He commanded three brigades of Indians in combat in the Indian Territories. Major General </span><b><span style='font-size:9.0pt;font-family: Arial;color:windowtext;text-transform:uppercase'>Franklin Gardner</span></b><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Arial; color:windowtext'> (1823-1873) commanded a cavalry brigade at Shiloh and was in command of Port Hudson from end of 1862 until its surrender in July 1863; exchanged and served in Mississippi under General Taylor. <b>War-date</b> AEsS on verso of clipped document submitted by Major </span><b><span style='font-size:9.0pt;font-family:Arial;color:windowtext; text-transform:uppercase'>William B. S. B. Maxey Br Genl.</i>”; also “<i>Recommended</i>” by Chief Surgeon of the 3rd District </span><b><span style='font-size:9.0pt;font-family:Arial;color:windowtext; text-transform:uppercase'>I. R. Barrett</span></b><span style='font-size: 12.0pt;font-family:Arial;color:windowtext'>; followed by the boldly penned approval of Major General “<i>Frank. Gardner</i>.” Maxey’s annotation is very light and mostly illegible, though signature and rank are very clear; two tears with no paper loss of no affect to signatures expertly repaired on recto.</span></p>
