C96 SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL WITH VL&D RETAILER MARKING & MATCHING STOCK. Cal. 7.63mm. S# 31695. Bbl. 5 1/2". Lg. Ring C96 semi-automatic pistol mfg. by Mauser. Top flat of the faceted breech is marked with Mauser's mfg. information, S# and a double Crown/U commercial proof on left flats, with an Ulm antler proof on the right flat. Right side of frame is marked "WAFFENFABRIK MAUSER/ OBERNDORF A NECKAR", with a "VON LENGERKE/ & DETMOLD/ NEW-YORK" retailer stamp present on the left side of the frame. The majority of metal components exhibit a rust blue finish with some smaller components exhibiting either a nitre blue or strawed finish. Frame is mounted with 2-piece grooved wood grips. Lanyard ring provision on frame has been ground off and filled. Standard blade front sight with V-notch tangent rear sight graduated from 50-1000. All numbers are matching and include the frame, floorplate, follower, lock frame, lock frame stop, sear, sear arm, locking block, hammer, bolt, firing pin, bolt stop, bbl. extension, as well as the grips, which are stamped with the full S# on the interior of the panels. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: matching stock with unmarked brown leather harness. CONDITION: metal components retain the majority of their original rust blue finish, exhibiting some areas of wear and thinning, some marks from handling and storage, as well as areas of light surface oxidation overall. Nitre blued and strawed components exhibit wear that shows through to gray patina. In-the-white components exhibit scattered spots of age related discoloration. Bright bore, exhibiting consistent mild pitting, while retaining strong rifling throughout. Grips show some scattered marks from handling and storage, but are otherwise excellent overall. Stock has been modified, with four now empty rectangular incisions, various small pin holes, as well as five larger holes on the side. Hinge plate exhibits moderate surface oxidation, with the harness loop no longer present. Lug retains a dark gray patina. Leather harness remains malleable, showing some sm. losses to the stitching, as well as age related cracking and crazing overall. PROVENANCE: the collection of Curtis H. Halvorson. (23-5821/MLW).
