MAURICE UTRILLO
(Paris 1883-1955 Dax) Figures devant l'église, 1928, oil on wood (3 parts), signed, dated Maurice Utrillo 1928, 89 x 62 cm, with frame, (PM). Certificate: Wildenstein Institute, Paris, 20 September 2002. He was afraid of everything: the men who would beat him up, the women who ridiculed him so frequently; people in general had made his life a misery ... In the life of a down-and-out hermit, punctuated by periods spent in sanatoria and prisons, painting provided Maurice Utrillo with his single great joy, a refuge, and a means to express the music contained within himself. And for him painting also held an even purer joy: the churches. Simple village church or cathedral, old or new, they meander like a floral garland through the work of this Yorick of the art world, a man who might best be likened to a drunken clown. The Sacré Coeur Basilica on Montmartre, the cathedrals of Reims, Chartres, and Paris, the churches of the suburbs and the surrounding countryside, Maurice portrayed them in the hundreds and all with loving tenderness. Churches were his true love: "That's what I best like to paint, churches, even when they are ugly". It did not matter to him if they were beautiful or ugly, they moved his soul and it this emotion which he mysteriously captured on canvas. Painting turned into love poetry. (in: J.-P. Grespelle, Utrillo, Kirchen, Paris 1960).
