(1790 - 1856) ""Father Mathew"", Irish temperance leader, his witnessing of widespread drunkenness in Cork brought him to launch a temperance crusade in Ireland, Scotland, Great Britain and America. His crusade in Cork was so successful that crime and drunkenness dropped to a fraction of previous levels. Rare A.Q.S. 1p. 8vo., Boston, Oct. 9, 1849, a quote from Romans signed at conclusion: ""It is good not to eat Flesh, and not to drink Wine, nor anything whereby thy Brother is offended, or scandalized, or made weakà"" A dime-sized chip at right margin affects citation only, some toning and light wrinkles, overall good.
