MASSIVE BRITISH PERCUSSION RAMPART OR RAIL GUN W/
STAND. Approx. 1" smooth bore. NSN. These lg. guns were used either mounted at the top of a wall or on the rail of a ship for repelling individuals at close quarters. Surviving examples are fairly rare. This piece has 23” bbl. w/ belled mouth & was designed to take a very heavy charge as breech section measures 2 1/4" across. London black powder proofs are at top left. Tower marked percussion lock also stamped w/ "V. R." under a crown was converted from flint to percussion. Bbl. does not appear to have been converted. Full length stock of relatively plain European walnut is brass mounted. Left side of butt is stamped “BARNETT” “GUNMAKERS” “LONDON” in oval cartouche. An iron yoke is installed just in front of balance point. Heavy steel ramrod is held by single lg. beaded brass pipe. No other markings are present except for a broad arrow & “WD” on lg. lock screw. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: stand w/ cast bronze base & steel shaft. CONDITION: very good. Bbl. mostly brown patina w/ some areas of deeper corrosion. Lock w/ considerable amount of case hardening color under dirt & grime. Stock retains nearly all of its original oil finish w/ a number of light & heavy knocks & bumps.
