MASSIVE AMERICAN, POSSIBLY CONFEDERATE BOWIE.
18.5” Overall, massive 13.5” clip point, 2.75” wide, .25” thick at ricasso. This is among the largest fighting knife I have ever encountered. The skill & manufacture ranks among the best American primitive knives. The blade is beautifully flat ground w/ 6" sharpened false edge. The upswept point is not a typical Confederate feature & the only American knife reminiscent to me is another large iron mounted bowie pictured as knife #1 from Robert Abels collection “Classic American Bowie Knives” which was thought made in Texas. The grip is finely checkered horn. Blade is stabilized by 2 square projections at top of blade piercing “C” shaped iron cross guard. The round iron pommel is retained by an octagonal handmade nut. There is an additional whole & the pommel which possibly originally had a lanyard ring stud. This knife was just recently purchased from a Pasadena pawnshop which buyer stated was pawned by descendent of the Buffalo soldier. CONDITION: very good overall, blade overall is gray w/ scattered staining & pin prick pitting. Blade is still quite sharp w/ few small nicks in cutting edge. Iron pommel, cross guard, & ferrule have remnants of black paint or japanning. The ferrule’s soldered joint is broken ferrule is loose. Horn grip has 2 hairline cracks w/ hand worn patina.
