258. MARTIN BORMANN

(1900-1945?). Powerful party leader in Nazi Germany and one of Hitler’s closest lieutenants. High command posts include SS (1928-33); Chief of Staff to Deputy Führer Rudolph Hess(1933-41); Head of Nazi Party Chancellery (1941-45). Bormann was never officially declared dead until 1973. Partly printed DS as Reichsleiter in German, 4pp, 8¼"x12", [Berlin], Jan 31, 1943. This document is the architect’s copy of a contract for work on the Party Chancellery building in Berlin, between the architect Professor Heinrich Michaelis and the Berlin carpentry firm of Heinrich Grotemeyer, on behalf of Bormann as commissioner of the project. Specifically to be accomplished was “The construction and delivery of doors, sky lights, heater paneling and wall pedestals...” which was to cost some 81,000 Reichsmarks. Boldly signed at conclusion in red wax pencil. Dealing mainly with the various responsibilities of the contractor; it includes 6½pp of typed cost breakdowns with detailed descriptions of the work to be done. Hitler had the grandiose new Chancellery built in great haste in 1939 to impress visiting dignitaries as he maneuvered to dominate Europe. This building was part of Hitler’s plans for rebuilding Berlin. As events actually transpired, Hitler’s private bunker was constructed below the Chancellery garden and after their suicides his body and that of his wife were burned in its courtyard. The building was destroyed during the fall of Berlin. Bormann controlled Hitler’s finances and often dealt with his real estate and building projects. Even as the tide of war began to turn against Germany and labor materials become scarce, the Nazis continued lavish building projects. Fine.
