French military leader on the side of the colonists during the American Revolution, receiving a commission as major general by special resolution of Congress. A close friend of Washington, Lafayette served on his staff, later serving with distinction during the Virginia campaign leading to the British surrender at Yorktown. He later took a prominent part in the French Revolution. Lengthy memorandum signed “LF,” 1p, oblong 12mo, Lagrange, May 30, n.y. On blue stationery, Lafayette transmits a certificate that should help “poor Simon” avoid recruitment. He details how it must be registered, advising the entire procedure must be settled by the first of June. Simon has a fever and cannot be present for the procedure, so his friend must settle the problem for him in Coulommiers. Lafayette advises that if not concluded within the deadline, there is a risk that Simon would be recruited. He also states that George [his son], would not be back until the day after tomorrow. Boldly penned. Beautifully matted beside lithograph portrait and descriptive plaque and contained under glass within handsome gilt frame. Overall 24½"x21½".
