MARIE LOUISE
(1791 - 1847) Second wife of Napoleon Bonaparte, mother of Napoleon II, fled to Vienna following Napoleon's abdication. A.L.S. "Louise", 2pp. 8vo., Parma, Feb. 4, 1821 to her friend Victoire de Crenneville. Just six months before the death of her husband, she writes of the poor health of her friend's father, in part: "…I pray every day a prayer for [him]…I have but little confidence in my feeble prayers, but at least they are fervent because they come from a heart which is attached to you…". She complains of her own illness, and the "horrible things" she has been given for treatment and mentions that she would like to spend the summer in Vienna, provided that the war would end by then. Very good.
