MARCEL DUCHAMP (1887-1968) AIR DE PARIS / PARIS AIR (50 cc D'AIR DE PARIS) signed, titled and dated "Marcel Duchamp 1964 Exempl. Arturo 50cc air de Paris" in the center; inscribed "Marcel Duchamp 1964 Ex Arturo" and engraved "AIR DE PARIS, 1919 EDITION GALERIE SCHWARZ, MILAN" on a copper plate affixed to the artist's wooden storage case glass ampoule with artist's wooden storage case ampoule: 415/16 x 25/8 x 25/8 in. (14.6 x 8.3 x 8.3 cm) executed 1919-1964 The original, produced in 1919, is in the permanent collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the present lot was produced under the artist's supervision; it is an artist's proof, dedicated to Arturo Schwarz, from an edition of eight plus one replica reserved for the artist and two replicas made for museum exhibition purposes. ESTIMATE: - $200,000-300,000 Before leaving Paris for the United States late in 1919, Duchamp bought a souvenir for his friend and patron Walter Arensberg. Asking a pharmacist on rue Blomet to empty a glass bottle containing a "physiological serum," Duchamp told him to let it fill with air and then seal it up again.
