After World War II, he attended the College of Mines and Metallurgy (now UTEP), and then a year at the Chouinard Art Institute. Upon returning to El Paso, he became Peter Hurd's mural assistant. As one of America's leading regionalist painters, Hurd encouraged Acosta to embrace his Mexican American heritage in his work. Subsequently, the people and scenes of El Paso's barrios became Acosta's primary subject matter, and to his credit, Acosta became Texas' leading interpreter of Mexican American way of life in Texas.

This painting is of a neighbor and friend of Manuel Acosta. Her yellow kitchen, filled with the sweet chirping sounds of parakeets, was a place of gathering and social discourse. Outside the window is the typical courtyard found in Mexican influenced homes in the Southwest. Seated in her chair is the benevolent queen of the household, hands peacefully crossed in her soft pink housedress.

Acosta is the master visual storyteller, recording the colors, people, and life of his beloved El Paso.Condition Report: Excellent condition.
