MAN RAY (American, 1890-1976) UNTITLED (ADY WITH GIRLFRIEND IN MOVEMENT) artist's stamp on verso "Addy" (sic) inscribed in pencil on verso vintage gelatin silver print 31/2 x 51/8 in. (8.9 x 13 cm) circa 1936 ESTIMATE: $10,000-15,000 PROVENANCE L'Atelier Man Ray, PARIS Private Collection, ITALY EXHIBITED NEW YORK, Sean Kelly Gallery, MARCEL DUCHAMP / MAN RAY: FIFTY YEARS OF ALCHEMY, January 27-March 4, 2000 This unusually animated photograph includes Man Ray's lover, Ady, with whom he spent the summer of 1936 in the south of France, near Antibes. The spontaneity of the photograph is rare in the artist's work. His intense sudden passion for this woman, with whom he had but a fleeting liaison, can perhaps be considered an explanation for this spontaneity. "Man Ray's relations with Kiki, Lee Miller, Adrienne and Juliet add colorful chapters to the history of the manifold form of collaboration known as 'the artist and his model'" (Roger Shattuck, PERPETUAL MOTIF: THE ART OF MAN RAY, Washington D.C., 1988, pp. 322-323). Ady is seen with her companion in a blurred kind of dance, giving the photograph a truly joyous and carefree quality, perhaps a visual souvenir of that summer spent next to the sea.
