MAN RAY (American, 1890-1976) SELF PORTRAIT vintage gelatin silver print 37/16 x 21/4 in. (8.7 x 5.7 cm) circa 1932 ESTIMATE: $15,000-25,000 PROVENANCE L'Atelier Man Ray, PARIS Private Collection, ITALY Throughout his career, Man Ray created many self-portraits in a variety of media. Here Man Ray poses with his attributes, a tripod and the lens of a camera, visible behind his shoulder. Man Ray's objective was to "explore the no-man's land between art and photography" (Roger Shattuck, PERPETUAL MOTIF: THE ART OF MAN RAY, Washington, D.C., 1988, p. 332). Significantly, he is sitting in front of his camera, demonstrating that the artist's hand and mind, not the machine, is the most important aspect of creating a successful photograph. This self-portrait provides us an intimate glimpse into the life of this artist. Although Man Ray first used photographs as records of his paintings, he soon came to identify himself as a photographer, and was shortly thereafter considered a photographic genius, still influential to this day.
