(9.5 x 8.3 cm) paper: 4 9/16 x 3 3/8 in. (11.6 x 8.6 cm) circa 1924 PROVENANCE Private Collection, PRINCETON Vivian Horan Fine Art, NEW YORK Mr. & Mrs. Marshall Cogan, NEW YORK Private Collection, CALIFORNIA In 1915, after arriving in New York from Paris, Marcel Duchamp crossed the Hudson River and met Man Ray in Ridgefield, New Jersey. Their instant rapport led to one of the longest and most productive friendships in 20th-century art. They collaborated on numerous projects, including documentary photographs of Duchamp's work that ended up as works of art themselves, and photographs of Duchamp as Rrose Sélavy, his feminine alter-ego. A more traditional portrait, the present lot was created when Duchamp lived at the Hotel Istria, virtually next door to Man Ray's studio on the rue Campagne Première. It is a contact print on carte-postale paper stock.
