(MAN BETRAYS A “FRIEND” TO CREDITORS)
A. L. S. 4pp. legal folio, St. Helena, La., Mar. 4th, 1822, in which a man, apparently to improve his own situation, offers to betray one of his former friends who has hidden himself and his slaves from his creditors. In part: "... You seem to think that I am the friend of Anderson...had I not held you in high esteem I would not have concerned with Anderson at all. He might have gone to Africa or to Hell... I took the trouble to seize on his shattered remains... without your advice...The first information that I received that Anderson had run [with] his Negroes and cattle and his wife...I ...sent the sheriff the very evening that information... I...used a little stratagem. I told him that... if he would fetch back his property and family and...$1000 that I would get you to wait another year...some says that he has run them to Texas... I, Gentlemen have done all I can for you...and have lost friends in so doing....”. We don’t doubt his last statement...A few marginal tears, rough margins, otherwise very good condition.
