MAJOR GENERALS FROCK COAT FROM THE INDIAN WARS

ERA. This attractive and exceptionally well made Major Generals frock coat likely dates from the late 1870’s. It has a fine grade dark blue wool body with darker blue velvet collar & cuffs. The bottom edge of the coat is unhemmed. The double breasted coat has 3 groups of 3 buttons on each side indicating a rank of Major General. Each cuff has 3 smaller buttons and the tails have 4 larger buttons. There are eyes sewn to the top of the shoulders to accept shoulder straps with hooks on the back. The sleeves are lined in striped cotton and the body is lined with a dark polished cotton material. There is an inside breast pocket on the left side and 2 tail pockets lined in brown cotton. There’s a label in the back of the collar that reads “Browning King & Co. New York”. William Browning first appears in the 1870 New York Census as a maker of uniforms and clothing. CONDITION: coat has 2 tiny holes likely caused by insect damage. Colors are bright. Wool is in excellent condition. All buttons are present. (02-18991/BF). $1,200-1,600.
