Bolaffi presents the 20th posters auction featuring affiches of rare beauty and elegance belonging to the beginning of the 900’s. The posters will be put up for sale on December 6, at 2.00pm, during the two session of Bolaffi Poster Auction.
This unique portfolio of vintage posters, the last heritage of the 20th century, represents a unique opportunity for collectors and investors who want to secure a collectible before the market goes mainstream, while owning a spectacular decorative object.
something examples up for auction have been for the most part printed at the beginning of the twentieth century and bear the signatures of the most notable graphic artists of the period, such as Metlicovitz, Dudovich, Villa, Laskoff, Mauzan, Malerba, Beltrami... But, also those realized by unknown artists are of significant artistic value, such as the fascinating and dynamic “Coppa della Perugina” designed by Seneca and printed in the 1920’s.
A good eight posters have been designed by the hand of Leopoldo Metlicovitz, considered together with Hohenstein and Dudovich, one of the three “fathers” of Italian poster art: four of these Metlicovitz’s, all extremely elegant, promote the grand fashion design firm Mele of Naples.
But Metlicovitz’s real masterpiece, considered by many to be the finest Italian vintage poster ever, is without doubt his “Sogno d’un valzer”, in which elegance and graphic finesse are magnified through a breath-taking combination of contrasting colors.
Returning to the superb Marcello Dudovich, Bolaffi proposes among others nine highly unusual sketches in tempera used to print some advertising maquettes for the pharmaceutical company, Roche.
Last but not least, there are also highly notable movie posters three realized for “Cabiria”, the most important Italian silent movie, one for “Fantomas” by Mauzan and one for “Ladri di biciclette” by Brini.
