MADISON, JAMES
(1751 - 1836) Fourth President of the United States considered the ""Father of the Constitution"", he authored the Federalist papers and sponsored the Bill of Rights. Partly-printed D.S. as President, 1p. folio, Washington, Aug. 4, 1810, an intriguing four-language ship's papers for the vessel ""General Eaton"", bound from Norfolk, Conn. for London with a cargo of tobacco, cocoa and staves. Beneath Madison's signature appear four lines in French, indicating that the ship also contained ""Wine for Ombu & Lunege, Jan. 4, 1811"" and paid ""four franks seventy-five centimes..."". Co-signed by Secretary of State ROBERT SMITH, and additionally signed by Notary Public LITTLETON W. TAZEWELL, who later became Governor of Virginia. Bottom and top margins quite dampstained and significantly chipped with some loss of text, not affecting Madison's signature. Otherwise the usual folds, overall just good condition.
