<b>99. (DOLLEY MADISON) EDWARD THORNTON </b>(1766 - 1852) British diplomat and politician. Third person A.L.S. signed in the body of the text, 1p. 8vo., [Washington, ca. 1803-1804], to First Lady Dolley Madison, in part: "<i>...Sir Thornton presents his best compliments to Mrs. Madison, and returns her his sincere thanks for the Essence of Roses of which she was so good as to deprive herself for Mrs. Merry. He should feel some regret at having ever mentioned the circumstances to Mrs. Madison, if he did not flatter himself with the hope...of making up the loss...</i>". Thornton was secretary to the first minister Great Britain sent to the United States in 1791. By 1793, he had become vice consul and by 1796, secretary of the legation. The "<i>Mrs. Merry</i>" mentioned in this letter was the wife of the British Minister, Anthony Merry, who arrived in December 1803 to take the poset during the administration of President Thomas Jefferson for which James Madison was the Secretary of State.
