Lot Includes: One original set of Indian War Era US Cavalry M1885 Butler Varney Sidelines. Unlike hobbles which are made to tie up the two front legs of a horse, the sideline were designed to tie up one front leg and one back leg. This restricted the mobility of the horse while grazing. The Butler Varney sidelines had an unusual buckle fastening hook set up to make it more difficult for a horse thief to undo the sidelines. There are some individual markings cut into the leather. All the rivets, buckles, and the chain including the swivel are present and original. One early set of Horse Hobbles with Buckles for the front legs. These are probably civilian and not military issue. **Leather on the 1885 US Cavalry Set is very good with little to no cracking and is pliable. Early civilian set has some chipping and flaking to the leather with a few cuts or cracks around the edges, but still pliable and shows well. Overall both are in very good condition.** $300 -$400
