Private collection, London Whilst best remembered as an actor, MacLiammóir originally studied art at the Slade, London (1915-1916). From an early age he was fascinated by the work of Aubrey Beardsley and the decadence of art nouveau. In London he joined the Gaelic League and learnt Irish, which stood him in good stead when he arrived in Dublin circa 1917. Henceforth he was pivotal in Irish literary, dramatic and artistic circles, illustrating numerous books and along with Hilton Edwards founded the Gate Theatre in Dublin (see Snoddy, pp.398-400).
