MÉRIMÉE, Prosper.- Carmen. Paris, Calmann Lévy, 1884. In-12° carré (pet. tache marginale p. 38-39). Reliure pastiche XIXe s. exécutée par De Samblanx en 1911 : plein veau gris marbré dans le ton, jeux de cadres faits de divers filets et roulettes ornés dorés, dos lisse orné en long de filets ornés et fleurons rocaille dorés, filet et roulette ornée dorés sur les coupes et remplis, tête dorée, couv. bleue cons. (pli et lég. salissures sur la couv. du brochage d'origine).
De la collection "Calmann Lévy".
Le tirage courant est de format in-16° (selon Vicaire) et compte 50 japon et 225 ordinaires illustrés d'un portrait par Lalauze et de 8 vignettes par le peintre chilien Santiago Acos.
Exemplaire réimposé (?) en in-12°, sur papier vergé filigrané ("Porfino ?"), non illustré mais enrichi de 4 superbes et fines aquarelles à pleine page sur japon signées Henri de Sta, dessinateur français actif c. 1890, connu surtout pour ses dessins humoristiques.
A la fin du siècle passé, le livre illustré se cherchait une nouvelle place. Les bibliophiles eurent donc l'idée d'employer les talents d'un illustrateur dévolu à un seul amateur, c'est ainsi que se répandit donc l'idée de payer des artistes afin d'embellir des collections particulières. Nous avons d'ailleurs trouvé trace d'un autre exemplaire du même texte mais sur japon, enrichi par Henri de Sta de 16 aquarelles, apparemment marginales. Cet ex., vendu à Paris en 2002, était couvert d'une simple demi-reliure par Bretault.
Très bel exemplaire dans une excellente reliure pastiche de De Samblanx. 400 500 Euros

After full payment, buyers are kindly requested to take away their purchases immediately after the auction or at the bookshop the next Tuesday after the auction 230 av. Louise, from 2 pm until 6 pm.
Goods will be send only after customers’ payment.
Packing and dispatching are entirely at the buyer’s own expense.
Books whose price exceed 100 EUR will be send by registered post.

Payment will be made in Euro's. We do not accept credit cards neither cheques whose total amount exceed 200 EUR or cheques not validated for higher sum.
Terms of sale require buyers to pay immediately for their purchases, which means that lots will be released to them only when full and cleared payment as been received by us
In addition to the hammer price, the buyer has to pay a buyer’s premium of 21%, V.A.T. inclusive, all strictly in cash and in Euro's (EUR)
In case of original art and if the principles of the author’s rights are applicable, an extra 4% must be paid on each hammer price of at least 1250 EUR
All items are assumed to be in good condition unless otherwise stated. Buyers are kindly invited to carry out their own inspection of the lots they want to buy. All items to be auctioned are on view for several days prior to the sale.
Returning an item after the striking of the hammer will not be accepted, whatever the reason put forward. Those items bought on order must be inspected within 8 days after receipt. Any return after this term will be refused.
All items of the catalogue with the mention « n.c. » (non collationné = not inspected) are not subject to return. Neither are those sold in lots (two items or more) works consisting in multiple volumes and periodicals or series.
If you cannot attend the auction, we can execute written bids on your behalf. To ensure a satisfactory service, it is necessary to make arrangements for the services at least one day before the sale.
On every purchase Belgian law only is applicable, and all cases of dispute are exclusively to the competence of the Brussels Chamber.
