Made circa 1860-1867, this 1 gallon preserve jar has a tan salt glazed finish and marked "M & N ALLIE/MANUFACTURE,S/MOUND CITY/ILLS.". It stands approximately 10 1/4 inches high and is approximately 6 1/2 inches wide. Moses and Noah Aliff born in England and Canada respectively began making stoneware in Maine in the 1850s and in Mound City, Illinois in the 1860s and 1870s. Samples of their work from Mound City were exhibited at the Paris Expo in 1867. In the 1880s Noah lived in Pulaski, Illinois and made pottery with his nephews James and Albert.
