M. J. Nowakowski, Bronze ‘Portrait of a Man’, Poland, 2006
This expressive bronze head by the Polish sculptor Marek Jerzy Nowakowski (born 1963) is looking melancholically off into empty space. This bronze shows a modelled surface reminiscent of Rodin, mounted like a mask to a marble base. The forehead is bizarrely deformed, spreading out left and right like wings. Nowakowski described his masks as an attempt to ‘synthesise with the human face’.

The bronze has an incised number on the inner wall: ‘7/2‘. It is monogrammed ‘mjn’ and dated ‘06’. The bronze and the base are in good condition with slight signs of wear; the base shows one longer scratch. The piece is 45.5 cm high (including base).
