One-of-a-kind handwritten "Lynyrd Skynyrd All Time Top Ten" list by Ronnie Van Zant, written in bold pencil on an off-white 8.5 x 14 sheet of Lynyrd Skynyrd stationery during an interview with acclaimed rock journalist Michael Gray on November 15, 1974. Van Zant adds the header, signs below, “Ronnie Van-Zant,” and then runs down a list of his 10 favorite songs, which reads as follows:

“1. Dock of the Bay—Otis Redding / 2. Satisfaction—Rolling Stones / 3. Yesterday—The Beatles / 4. What’d I Say—Ray Charles / 5. If We Make It Through December—Merle Haggard / 6. Can’t Explain—The Who / 7. Big Boss Man—Jimmy Reed / 8. Respect—Aretha Franklin / 9. Will the Circle Be Unbroken—Traditional / 10. Light My Fire—Doors.”

Van Zant adds a brief handwritten note to the lower right, signing with his initials: “Please note: These are not in any order of preference. The[y] represent the ten most influential songs in my music career. RVZ.” This ‘top ten’ list, as well as Van Zant’s handwritten comments, were later published in the February 1975 issue of Let It Rock magazine. In fine condition, with light overall toning, a central horizontal fold, and a strip of masking tape along the top back edge. Accompanied by the original February 1975 issue of Let It Rock magazine, as well as a program from Lynyrd Skynyrd’s 1974 European Tour.

In November 1974, Lynyrd Skynyrd arrived in Scotland for their first European tour, supporting Dutch rockers Golden Earring. A UK-based music magazine, ‘Let it Rock,’ wanted to write a feature about the band and dispatched Gray to report on their first two concert dates—Glasgow and Edinburgh. As part of his article, Gray asked each band member to write down their ‘top ten’ songs, hoping to gather a sense of the music and artists that influenced them and informed their musical style. Gray assembled lists from all seven members of Lynyrd Skynyrd on November 15, 1974, prior to the band’s show at Edinburgh’s Odeon Theatre as part of their Nuthin' Fancy Tour. Van Zant remains rare and highly sought-after across all signed formats, with this handwritten ‘top ten’ list far and away the most substantial and significant example of Van Zant’s handwriting that we have offered for auction. A remarkable rock and roll keepsake detailing the songs that shaped the short musical career of a rock legend.
