Lyndon Johnson Condolence Letter sent to Betty GrissoM. This 31 January 1967 letter is typed on White House stationery (only a month after the Aprollo 1 fire). In the letter, the President says: "...I have felt the need to reach out to you and say that none of you is alone while so many share your grief and hold you in their hearts. It is little enough to say. Yet I think it would have meant a great deal to Gus. He was more than a brave man. He was a selfless man who suffered hazard gladly to open new vistas for mankind. He was a wise man who could say, with a sincerity we all recall, that exploration of space is worth the risk of life. That was his faith, and it was his life. In giving his life he has made his faith more meaningful for all men, for all time. It is faith in man; his works, his dreams, his search for destiny. It is a bond that joins the human family in hope, and unites it now in sympathy for you...". An important, heartfelt letter that expressed the feelings of the man and the nation. The original White House envelope to Mrs. Grissom is included. Unique.
