TLS, one page, 8 x 10.5, United States Senate letterhead, February 19, 1960. Letter to Paul C. Barrett, in part: "There is really no 'formula' for success. It is largely a matter of determining that this is what you want to do, of working constantly to become familiar with public affairs and public opinion and of launching out in a definite program of political activity. You will probably want to start by participating in politics in some capacity while you are in law school and then on the local level when you begin to practice. I think, however, if you study the careers of men in political life today, you will see how varied are their backgrounds and how numerous the avenues that have brought them to their present positions. I suggest that the two most important ingredients you will need will be confidence in yourself and faith in the Democratic system of government. Never be afraid to work long and hard hours, never turn a deaf ear to any person who comes to see you, never violate a trust of the people who become your friends down through the years." In fine condition, with a crease to the lower right corner. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, which bears a facsimile franking signature.
